INSTALLING A WATERWORKS WATER SOFTENER

INSTALLATION

Once you have purchased your Waterworks water softener, the following instructions have been carefully put together and if followed should ensure that the installation is trouble free. If you decide that you would prefer to have your installation carried out by a qualified engineer contact out installtions team at Waterworks and we can advise you regarding the costs, you can alternatively purchase a full installation kit from us.

PLANNING THE INSTALLATION AND SITING THE WATER SOFTENER

Bearing in mind the water by-laws, check the water pressure. Locate the pipework to which the softener inlet is going to be taken from and locate the drain, you will (change to May) also require an electrcity supply and easy access available for servicing and salt filling. The softener should be located as close as possible to the incoming mains supply. Ideally situate the softener where all of the facilities mentioned in planning the installation are available. To install the water softener you will need a minimum pressure of 20psi and a maximum pressure of 120psi. You will also require connections, hoses and fittings to the water supply, waste and overflow.

BACK FLOW PREVENTION DEVICE

A double check valve WRAS Approved should always be fitted when installing a water softener.

TEST PRESSURE

It is very important to test the pressure and must be carried out before you commence any further. Low or high pressure could result in damage or non operation of the softener. If daytime pressure is above 120psi, fit a pressure reducing valve. If you are in any doubt fit a pressure reducing valve as it will ensure the long life of the softener. If the daytime pressure is less that 20psi, a pressure pump is required. You may experience a pressure loss of up to 15psi through the water softener.

PLEASE NOTE: This water softener must not be installed where combination boilers, un-vented water heaters or equipment where high flow rates are required, upgrade machines are available at a cost, please contact us for details.

FLEXIBLE HOSES

Care should be taken when installing the water softener on flexible hoses to avoid any kinking or restriction to the drain and overflow piping, which may effect performance of the unit. Installation kits can be purchased from Waterworks, please note if Waterworks are installing the unit a fixing kit is provided as part of Waterworks installation service.

INSTALLING BYPASS VALVES AND INLET AND OUTLET CONNECTIONS

To facilitate servicing and maintenance a set of bypass valves should always be fitted. It is strongly recommended that a filter washer is installed on the outlet of the softener to avoid damage should resin loss occur. Install as necessary and connect to installed bypass valves - 15mm valves should be used when installing a water softener.

IMPORTANT PLEASE NOTE - CONNECTING THE DRINKING WATER SUPPLY

When installing a water softener to the whole house, a hard water drinking supply must be installed, alternatively you can leave a cold supply available on hard water for drinking purposes. Hard water taps kits can be supplied by Waterworks, if required. Note: Softened water increases the sodium level and should not be consumed by anyone who is on a low sodium diet. Babies who are bottle fed must not drink softened water as their baby feeds have the correct level of sodium in them. If you are uncertain about the above, please contact your doctor.
